Flores Sea Recorded 148 Earthquakes Throughout April, BMKG: Need Education On Disaster Mitigation By Local Government And Community

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Kupang Geophysics Station recorded 148 earthquakes in NTT occurred in the Flores Sea during April 2022. This number is the highest of 277 earthquakes at sea.

Head of the Kupang Geophysics Station, Margiono, said that during this period, earthquakes were dominated by small or magnitude earthquakes below 4 (M < 4.0) with 311 events and shallow depth (<60 km) with 251 events.

"Furthermore, the highest earthquake occurred on April 4, 2022 with 18 events," said Margiono, quoted by Antara, Thursday, May 5.

Margiono asked the public not to panic about the earthquake. He hoped that there would be education on how to mitigate the earthquake and tsunami, both by the local government and the community.

"Through good disaster mitigation, there is a minimization of casualties during the earthquake and tsunami disaster," Margiono added.

He appealed to the public to follow official information regarding the earthquake and tsunami only through the BMKG. Margiono emphasized that BMKG always observes and monitors earthquake events 24 hours a 7 day. Thus, all information related to disasters can be accessed by the public at large.

"Official information is only from BMKG. Don't believe in hoaxes or fake news about earthquakes and tsunamis from irresponsible parties," he pleaded.
