Smuggling Of 96 Protected Animals In West Papua Successfully Prevented
SORONG - A joint team from the Natural Resources Conservation Center, the Gakkum Task Force, and the Police foiled an attempt to smuggle 97 wild animals out of Papua Island.
Acting (Plt) Head of the West Papua KSDA Center, Budi Mulyanto at a press conference at the BBKSDA Office in Sorong City, Friday, April 22, said that 96 wild animals in the form of birds were secured, 96 were protected and one was not protected.
He explained that as many as 96 birds whose status was protected were 11 parrot parrots, 2 Mambruk Ubiat, 1 Kabare parrot, 13 chocolate parrots, 7 Koki cockatoo, 40 black head Kasturi, Rainbow Lorikeet as many as 5 tails, dark parrots as many as 6 tails, and small yellow Cenderawasih as many as 11 tails.
"Meanwhile, wild birds whose status is still in the unprotected category are 1 Papuan butcher," he said as quoted by Antara.
He said that the wild animals came from Jayapura, Papua Province with the destination of Surabaya using the Pelni ship which was later thwarted in the city of Sorong, West Papua Province. .
He said that dozens of these wild animals would be returned to Papua Province to be released into their habitat.
"We also urge the public not to capture and sell protected wildlife but to preserve it for future generations," he said.
