Attention! BPOM Withdraws Circulation Of Kinder Joy Chocolate Products From The Market

JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) has temporarily withdrawn or stopped the circulation of Kinder brand chocolate products on the market. This chocolate product is known to be quite popular with children.

Head of BPOM Penny K. Lukito said the Kinder Joy product was withdrawn from circulation due to the findings of salmonella (non-thypoid) bacterial contamination in a number of European countries. The findings were warned by the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA).

"The POM Agency will temporarily stop the circulation of Kinder brand products, until it is confirmed that the product does not contain Salmonella bacteria contamination," said Penny in a statement, Monday, April 11.

Penny explained that BPOM would ensure the termination of the circulation was carried out in accordance with applicable procedures. Currently, BPOM will also test the bacterial content in Kinder Joy which is sold and circulated in Indonesia.

"To protect the public by prioritizing the precautionary principle, the POM Agency will conduct random sampling and testing throughout Indonesia for registered Kinder brand products," said Penny.

For information, on April 2, 2022, the British FSA issued a public warning regarding the voluntary recall of Kinder Surprise brand chocolate products because they were suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

In the case findings, there were victims who consumed Kinder and felt mild symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. The victims affected were 63 children, but they did not cause death.

The recalled products are Kinder Surprise brand chocolate products in single 20 gram packages and 3 @ 20 gram packages, with the expiration date of each product up to 7 October 2022.

As a precaution, the product recall was expanded by adding several variants, namely Kinder Surprise branded products in 100 grams packaging, Kinder Mini Eggs in 75 grams, Kinder Egg Hunt Kit in 150 grams, and Kinder Schokobons in 200 grams with an expiration date of 20 April 2022 – August 21, 2022. All Kinder chocolate products are produced by Ferrero NV/SA in Belgium.

All Kinder brand chocolate products that are recalled in a number of European countries mentioned above are not registered with the POM. Meanwhile, Kinder brand products registered with BPOM with product variant names include Kinder Joy, Kinder Joy for Boys, and Kinder Joy for Girls. The product is manufactured by Ferrero India PVP, LTD, an Indian company.
