At The IPU Forum, Puan Maharani Asks Developed Countries To Help The World With Clean Energy Transition
JAKARTA - Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, at the world parliamentary forum Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Nusa Dua, Bali, asked parliaments of developed countries to help developing countries transition to clean energy.
The reason is that the transition to clean energy requires technological support and investment that is not cheap.
"Clean energy transitions in developing countries also need technology support and investment," said Puan in a written statement quoted by Antara, Wednesday, March 23.
Therefore, Puan, who this year chaired the IPU assembly, asked member countries to take concrete actions to reduce the impact of climate change.
"It's not enough to just make international commitments and agreements. However, we need to translate this commitment into real action at home. Parliament plays a key role in this,” said Puan.
The IPU's 144th Assembly Session at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC) Nusa Dua, which was held on 20–24 March 2022, made climate action a major issue.
The theme of this year's IPU assembly session is "Getting to Zero: Mobilizing Parliaments to Act on Climate Change".
In her speech when chairing the governing council, Puan invited parliament members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to realize their commitment to allocate a budget for climate funds of up to US$100 billion or Rp.1.434 trillion per year.
The climate fund is needed to finance programs and policies aimed at overcoming the impacts of climate change and suppressing global warming in their respective countries.
“Climate change is a crisis for the existence of Planet Earth. Earth's warming has occurred faster than ever before. Today, the Earth is 1.1 degrees Celsius warmer than it was at the beginning of the last century. If world emissions are not reduced by 7.6 percent per year from 2020 to 2030, then the world will not reach the global warming target of 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius," said Puan during the meeting.
Therefore, Puan urges the world parliamentary forum to fulfill its promise to allocate a budget for climate action.
In addition, Puan also asked the world parliamentary forum to mobilize actions aimed at preventing and adapting to the impacts of climate change.
"And we must support the clean energy transition with technology transfer and investment," said Puan.
In order to achieve this goal, Puan, who serves as President of the 144th Assembly of the IPU, suggested to members that there be strengthening of global partnerships and multilateral cooperation, realizing commitments to various international agreements into concrete actions in their respective countries, and building a culture of peace ( culture of peace) that encourages dialogue, tolerance, and non-violence.
"Fourth, the need for parliament to play an active role in bridging differences between countries and trying to build mutual trust," said Puan.
