MUI Firmly Rejects Postponed 2024 Election

JAKARTA - Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Amirsyah Tambunan has firmly rejected the suggestion that the 2024 General Election be postponed for the next one to two years. "As a democratic country originating from, by and for the people, it is not good to have a tug-of-war in holding elections that will make the public for and against and divided," said Amirsyah, Sunday, February 27. "This will set a bad precedent in building democracy in the future. " he continued. In this context, Amirsyah invites the public to support the Maslahat Election based on the results of the Ijtima' Ulama of the VII MUI Fatwa Commission in Indonesia which was held at the Sultan Hotel, Central Jakarta, which will take place 9-11 November 2021.

According to him, one of the foundations for the implementation of the Maslahat Election based on the 1945 Constitution includes Article 7 that the President and Vice President hold office for five years, and after that they can be re-elected in the same office, only for one term. "This is one of the foundations of the election for benefit," concluded Amirsyah.
