BNPB Data, 2 People Are Reported To Have Died As A Result Of The West Sumatra Earthquake, 20 Others Were Injured

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded temporary data for victims of an earthquake measuring magnitude (M) 6.1 in West Pasaman, West Sumatra today.

As of 11.50 WIB, 2 people died and 20 people were injured.

"The information we got was that two people died and 20 people were injured. This is temporary data. It will be reported later", said BNPB Head, Suharyanto, in a virtual press conference, Friday, February 25.

Then, material losses caused by this earthquake included 1 unit of educational facilities being heavily damaged, as well as damage to banking facilities, the community meeting hall, and the hall of the West Pasaman regent's office.

Suharyanto admitted that he had ordered the rapid reaction team (TRC) to go to the earthquake-affected area in West Sumatra. He and his staff have planned to coordinate with the affected local governments directly.

TRC will ensure the establishment of a command post so that emergency response efforts can be carried out in a coordinated manner to lead activities in the field.

Furthermore, Suharyanto asked for evacuation posts to be available to accommodate the affected residents. Suharyanto asked the local government coordinated by the local BPBD to ensure the availability of the place.

"We will ensure that the basic needs of refugees can be provided quickly", said Suharyanto.

For information, an earthquake rocked West Sumatra at 08.39 WIB. BMKG initially recorded an earthquake measuring 6.2 M. Then, the earthquake strength was updated to M 6.1.

The parameter of the epicenter was recorded at kilometers northeast of West Pasaman, West Sumatra, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in the West Sumatra Province said the shock was felt strong for 3 to 5 seconds in West Pasaman Regency. In Limapuluh Kota Regency, residents felt a strong earthquake for 2 to 5 seconds.

Strong shaking was felt in several other areas, such as Agam Regency, Padang Pariaman, and Pariaman for 2 to 5 seconds. Meanwhile, Padang City reported that the shaking felt weak for 1 to 3 seconds.
