Ambulance Volunteers Steal 8 Oxygen Cylinders At Depok Hospital

DEPOK - The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bojongsari Police has arrested the perpetrators of the theft of eight oxygen cylinders at the Depok Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Depok.

Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bojongsari Police, Iptu Bowo, said the theft of oxygen cylinders carried out by the perpetrators was motivated by factors of living necessities. Bowo also said that the perpetrator with the initials CAN (23), was an ambulance volunteer.

According to CAN's confession, Bowo continued, he committed the theft because he needed tuition fees and daily necessities.

"The perpetrator studied at a private university in Jakarta, majoring in Industrial Engineering. It turned out that being a volunteer ambulance driver did not cover all the perpetrators' living expenses, one of which was paying for college. It was not paid off," explained Bowo, Friday, January 28.

The perpetrator, continued Bowo, was accompanied by a friend in the action. The stolen cylinder is in the oxygen cylinder storage warehouse at the Depok City Hospital.

"The warehouse where the canisters are stored is not locked, so there is an opportunity for the perpetrator and his two friends to bring a trolley to the front of the hospital. Transported by ambulance where he works so that he doesn't get suspicious," he said.

Incidentally, at the time of the incident, there was no guard at the front, so the perpetrators were free to go in and out of the hospital with gas cylinders.

"A total of eight cylinders, two oxygen cylinders measuring 1 kibik and six tubes measuring 6 kibik with a total loss of Rp. 32 million," he said.

Bowo added that the perpetrator was caught after members obtained CCTV footage installed at the hospital.

"After investigating, the whereabouts of the perpetrator was found to be at his parents' house, Kebon Duren area, Kali Mulya, Cilodong District. He was arrested on Thursday (27 January) early in the morning while he was resting," explained Bowo.

Based on CAN's confession, the stolen gas cylinders have not been sold.

"The gas cylinders have not been sold yet. The plan is to sell them and the profits will be used to increase the cost of daily living, including to continue studying for a time off due to being unable to pay for college. So the volunteer ambulance driver has little (salary)," said Bowo.

Separately, the Director of the Depok Hospital, Dr Devi Mayori, confirmed the incident. Devi said, to prevent similar cases, his party will carry out strict supervision.

"Of course we will re-evaluate why this problem occurred and supervision will be increased again," Devi told reporters.
