JAKARTA - Meta admits that online gambling promotion perpetrators continue to develop new ways to circumvent the platform's moderation system, including using social media comment columns to direct users to gambling sites.

Director of Public Policy Southeast Asia Meta, Sarim Aziz, emphasized that Meta does not allow gambling ads, but according to him, perpetrators are now using a combination of codes, words, and certain keywords that look normal to trick the detection system.

"Sometimes, they will use the comment column to direct people to third-party websites to try to attract them to these gambling sites, this is ongoing," Sarim said at a joint press conference with the Ministry of Communication and Digital on Tuesday, June 30.

He revealed that throughout 2025 Meta had deleted almost 61 million gambling-related content. However, with this new modus operandi, he assessed that eradicating online gambling could not be done by one party alone.

"Because this issue involves cross-country actors who are very financially motivated, Meta encourages collaboration between digital platforms, governments, and law enforcement to eradicate online gambling promotions in the digital space."

"This is a transnational problem, which requires that no one company can solve it alone. So, in my opinion, here is where industrial companies like Meta, law enforcement agencies, and Komdigi, we all have to work together to try to stop the behavior of these bad actors," he said.

Meta also agreed to form a team with the Ministry of Communication and Digital to strengthen efforts to eradicate online gambling, especially the new mode in the form of spam comments on social media.

Later, this team will be expanded by involving other digital platforms including TikTok, YouTube, and X, as well as law enforcement agencies such as the National Police, PPATK, and OJK.
