JAKARTA - The era of "digital twins" is getting closer. Google is reportedly developing a new feature in Google Gemini that allows users to create realistic 3D avatars from their own faces - and use them directly in AI content.

Not just a filter or cartoon character, this is a digital version that really resembles the user.

From Selfie to “AI Clone”

This feature, called Avatar, utilizes the Android XR Likeness technology, which was previously used to present realistic representations of users in virtual environments.

The process is relatively simple: users simply scan their faces using a smartphone camera through a short video. The data is then processed into a 3D model stored in the Gemini account.

After that, this avatar can be used repeatedly without having to upload photos again.

What makes it interesting, users just have to type commands like "@me" in the prompt. For example, ask the AI to create an image of "@me on Mars", and Gemini will immediately insert the user's digital face into the scenario.

This integration is said to run smoothly with Google's internal image generation system, opening up huge opportunities for more personalized creative content.

Even so, there are still big question marks: will this avatar also support AI video like the Veo model, or will it be limited to static images.

This feature has not been released to the public, but its appearance in the Google app code is a strong signal that the official launch is just a matter of time.
