Google is reportedly starting to replace the full-screen weather report view on Android with something that feels more generic. Instead of opening a neat and informative dedicated weather page, users are now directed to Google's search results for the word "weather".
This change does not affect the Pixel Weather app which is exclusive to the Pixel line. However, for the majority of non-Pixel Android users, the weather experience that previously appeared in full screen format is now said to be gradually removed.
For years, Google's app has provided a weather shortcut on the homescreen. With one tap, users are taken to a full-screen weather page that displays the current temperature, highest and lowest temperatures, weather conditions, and "feels like".
Below it there is an hourly forecast and a 10-day forecast. There is also an information card for wind, humidity, UV index, air pressure, to sunrise and sunset times. Precipitation, wind, and humidity graphs are also presented with a relatively clean and comfortable visual.
According to a report from 9to5Google, the experience is now being replaced by Google's standard search results view. When users tap the weather shortcut, they are directed to the search page for the word "weather", rather than to a dedicated full-screen page.
The difference is visually significant. The new interface condenses current temperature information and hourly forecasts into one card. Below it is a carousel for the 10-day forecast that can be tapped.
There is also a drop-down menu for precipitation, wind, humidity, and air quality - elements that are referred to as new additions. However, after scrolling further, users will find web results just like a regular search.
A number of users even reported receiving a notification that read "The weather page has moved." At the same time, the "View all details" button, which previously opened a full-screen experience, is no longer available.
The indication is clear: Google doesn't seem to want to maintain two separate weather experiences anymore - one based on a dedicated feed and another based on search results. The consolidation into Search will likely simplify product maintenance on the internal side, but the consequence is the loss of a more immersive and aesthetic display.
For Pixel device owners, this change does not apply. Pixel Weather continues to run as usual with its own app experience.
This move reflects a pattern that often emerges in Google's product strategy: experimentation, consolidation, then integration into a larger ecosystem - in this case, Search as the center of gravity.
Functionally, weather information is still available. But in terms of user experience, the nuance changes from a "mini app" that feels special to just a card in a search engine.
In the world of interface design, small details like this have a psychological impact. A spacious and curated visual gives the impression of attention. While generic looks feel efficient, but less personal. In an era where weather can determine outfits, schedules, and moods, the way information is presented is not a trivial matter.
