JAKARTA - OpenAI has added a new feature to ChatGPT, namely support for syncing mobile contacts. With this feature, users can find their friends who use the chatbot.

This step makes a big change to ChatGPT's function, from being just a chatbot to being more social. Although this contact sync feature is optional, others may share your number with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) application.

This can happen if someone else has your number and decides to sync their contacts with ChatGPT. The chatbot will access the number stored in the contact to find friends who also access ChatGPT.

"OpenAI may process your phone number if someone you know chooses to upload their contacts," OpenAI said on its official website, quoted on Wednesday, February 11.

Basically, OpenAI released this feature to make it easier for users to connect with others. If the system finds a phone number match, ChatGPT will automatically provide connection suggestions.

This synchronization is considered as OpenAI's first step in building a wider social networking ecosystem. This feature also supports the group chat function which can now accommodate up to 20 people in one discussion room.

The company explained that data processing is done very carefully to maintain user privacy. OpenAI claims not to store complete information such as names or email addresses from user contact lists.

They will only store phone numbers in a format that has been encoded or hashed on their servers. Users retain full control and can revoke sync access at any time through device settings.
