JAKARTA - After being detained for circulation in China, the Chinese government gave DeepSeek approval to purchase NVIDIA's H200 chips to strengthen the Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
This permit is not only given to DeepSeek. Launching from a Reuters report, other large Chinese companies such as ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent also received similar permits. If totaled, the four companies will buy more than 400,000 units of H200 chips.
Although all of these companies have obtained permits, the local government is still finalizing the regulatory requirements related to this purchase. The requirements are being decided by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said that his party had not received official information regarding the approval. However, Huang learned that the Chinese government was still processing the license into the final completion stage.
The H200 chip is the second most powerful product owned by NVIDIA which has been debated for the past few months by both countries. Initially, the US had banned the company from selling the advanced H200 chips to China.
Fortunately, the US has already given export permission. Now, NVIDIA only needs to get permission from Beijing authorities so that sales can run as they hope.
Even though NVIDIA will later get permission from both countries, sales of H200 chips to China will still be closely monitored. The reason is that the US government is concerned that the technology could help China strengthen its military.
