JAKARTA - Meta and EssilorLuxottica, its manufacturing partner, are considering doubling the number of Ray-Ban smart glasses that will be produced. This ambitious step is said to start at the end of the year.
According to a Bloomberg report, which has not been officially confirmed by both parties, both Meta and EssilorLuxottica are determined to increase their total production to 20 million units per year. This increase in production capacity is considered to be able to answer the increasingly strong market demand.
If market conditions are supportive or demand for smart glasses is increasing, production capacity is expected to increase again to 30 million units. For now, both companies have almost reached their initial production target, namely 10 million pairs.
Before this report came out, EssilorLuxottica had said that they wanted to accelerate manufacturing to meet the rapidly growing business needs. All of these plans are solutions to market demand that have not been answered.
Some time ago, Meta reportedly delayed the global expansion of the Ray-Ban Display glasses. This happened because the available supply was less, while the demand was quite high. Therefore, Meta has not expanded and still prioritizes stock availability in the US.
Although production of its smart glasses will be increased, Meta is reportedly making massive efficiency in its Reality Labs division. More than 1,000 jobs are reportedly being cut from the unit that focuses on developing virtual and mixed reality technology.
The Reality Labs division has spent more than 60 billion US dollars (Rp. 1.011 trillion) since 2020 to develop various products. However, of the many devices developed, the Ray-Ban smart glasses have been the most successful.
This is not surprising because the smart glasses do exceed the expectations of the general public. This device is not just an accessory because it provides features such as a photo camera, live broadcast support to social media, to direct interaction with Meta AI assistants.
