JAKARTA - The screening of Avatar 3 has taken place in several countries - including Indonesia, and accompanied by a significant increase in online interest.
Amid the increased attention surrounding the release, Kaspersky experts have identified an increase in cyber fraud campaigns that take advantage of the film's launch and users' desire to watch it online.
"Cybercriminals consistently use the premieres of major films to attract the attention of users and increase the effectiveness of their schemes," said Olga Altukhova, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky.
The fake website targeted users in various regions, indicating the attacker's attempt to reach a global audience.
The scam uses a scheme where cybercriminals create a malicious website that offers online access to the Avatar 3 movie.
The attackers put special emphasis on localization, publishing the site in various languages to attract users from different countries.
However, the translation is often poor and contains grammatical errors and inconsistencies, which can be an indicator of fraudulent activity.
When users try to play the video, they are shown a fake media player and asked to sign up to get "full" or "unlimited" access to the film.
As part of the registration process, users are asked to provide personal information, including email addresses and mobile phone numbers.
In a later stage, the fraudsters may ask for additional data, including payment details, under the guise of activating a "free trial."
This poses a risk of credential breaches, especially if users reuse passwords across services, and can also lead to financial losses.
"We recommend accessing movies only through official platforms and being cautious when encountering websites that ask for personal information or payments," he concluded.
