JAKARTA - Google is again improving the capabilities of the Circle to Search feature, now by adding AI Mode so users can have smarter and more in-depth conversations with what appears on the screen.
This update is starting to appear on the Google app version 16.47.49, and is an important change after Circle to Search only relied on standard image searches for further questions.
Circle to Search has been a favorite feature for Android users because it is able to search for anything on the screen with a simple gesture surrounding objects, highlighting text, or pressing them.
However, although Google has previously presented AI Mode in the Google app as a smarter alternative to regular searches, its integration with Circle to Search is not optimal. Every additional question that users type is still directed to the standard search results.

Now, the situation is changing. Circle to Search reportedly replaces the standard image search with AI Mode, allowing users to ask further questions and receive artificial intelligence-based answers. This change can be seen from the presence of a new search bar at the bottom of Circle to Search results, where users can directly type in additional questions and get a response from Google Gemini.
Google has actually been teasing this feature since July, but it's only been around now. Previously, Circle to Search results only featured search bars at the top of the screen, and whatever users typed will trigger a traditional search not AI Mode. With the presence of this update, all further questions are now automatically processed by AI.
A report from the Android Authority states that this behavior is in accordance with their initial findings since June, when AI Mode has started taking over part of the query. The presence of this new feature strengthens the integration of Circle to Search with AI Mode as a whole.
Google has also enriched AI Mode with useful abilities for students and researchers. Users can now include images related to mathematics or science, ask for complicated concept explanations, to ask for historical events. With a new search button placed directly at the Circle to Search interface, access to these features becomes more practical and fast.
This update is rolling out in stages, and is expected to make Circle to Search not only a visual search tool, but also an interactive and more useful AI assistant in understanding the context of what appears on the Android device screen.
