JAKARTA - Google has once again added an artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature to its service ecosystem. This time, Google Drive is getting an update that allows users to convert long PDF documents into short audio summaries, with the help of the Gemini AI model.
According to a report in Android Headlines, this feature will deliver audio summaries ranging from 2 to 10 minutes, depending on the length and complexity of the PDF document. This way, users can “listen to the PDF” instead of having to read it one by one—a new way to save time and reduce screen reliance.
How the “Audio Overview” Feature Works
Once this feature is enabled, when users open a PDF file in the web version of Google Drive, a new button labeled “Audio Overview” will appear in the toolbar. Once clicked, Drive will process the document using Gemini to generate an audio summary.
This audio summary will then be saved in a new folder called "Audio overviews," and users can play it directly through the Gemini side panel or from that folder.
Additionally, Google will send an email notification when the summary is ready to be played.
Currently, the AI audio summary feature is only available in English and exclusively for web users. Google stated that this feature will be rolled out gradually over the next 15 days to select Google Workspace and Google One users, including:
- Business Standard & Business Plus
- Enterprise Standard & Enterprise Plus
- Google One AI Premium
- AI Ultra & AI Ultra for Business
This new feature underscores Google's strategy to expand the role of Gemini AI across its products. Previously, Google also integrated Gemini into Google Meet and Chat, allowing users to capture missed meeting summaries.
Now, with the addition of audio features to Drive, the company is further strengthening its position as a fully connected, AI-powered productivity ecosystem.
