Lithium-ion Battery Resilience

The lithium-ion battery is now the main resource for various devices, from mobile phones to electric vehicles. However, the performance of this battery will continue to decline over time and use.

In theory, the movement of ions in batteries should last forever. However, factors such as charging cycles, high temperatures, and natural aging become barriers in their lifetime.

Manufacturers set the Lithium-ion battery life between 300 and 500 full charging cycles. This figure often exceeds actual life, as seen in consumer device batteries.

Currently, smartphones require a durability of up to 800 cycles. Calculation of the charging cycle alone cannot be an accurate benchmark. The depth of battery emptying (depth of discharge or DoD) greatly affects the number of cycles that can be achieved.

Factors That Make Battery Old

In a study conducted by Battery University, it was noted that the smaller the percentage of battery emptying, the longer it will be used. Batteries with 10 percent emptying can last up to thousands of cycles, much longer than full emptying.

Research shows that 11 new Li-polymer batteries tested in the laboratory have decreased capacity. The initial capacity of 88-94 percent fell to 73-84 percent after 250 full emptying cycles.

From the results of the study, it can be concluded that you should not leave the phone battery empty first just to charge it. Don't leave the battery empty up to 0 percent. It's better to charge it a little more often than waiting to run out completely.
