Menkomdigi Asks Roblox To Limit Access To Children's Communications While Playing

JAKARTA - Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid asked game developer Roblox to improve the system on its platform. He emphasized that all digital platforms including Roblox must ensure their services are in accordance with the child protection rules in force in Indonesia.

"We emphasize the importance of respecting and implementing the child protection rules that apply here," Meutya said in her official statement, after meeting with representatives of Roblox Asia Pacific.

The meeting with Roblox representatives occurred after concerns from parents and educators in Indonesia regarding exposure to content and inappropriate interactions in the game.

In fact, the Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) had appealed to students not to play Roblox, and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) encouraged Komdigi to block it.

However, instead of being blocked, the Ministry of Communication and Industry asked Roblox to limit access to communication between child users, filter out vulgar user-generated content, and clarify parental control features (parental control).

"This improvement ensures that Indonesian children are protected from content and potentially harmful interactions in the digital space," he explained.

Meutya emphasized that the Ministry of Komdigi will give Roblox time to make improvements and will conduct routine evaluations to ensure that the Roblox game meets the regulations in force in Indonesia.

Meutya hopes that Roblox as the Electronic System Operator (PSE) that has been registered since 2022 can play a role in building a safe, useful, and productive internet ecosystem.
