JAKARTA Elon Musk's social media platform X has received complaints from nine civil society organizations to EU and French regulators. The complaint highlights allegations of using user data for targeted advertising that may violate EU technology rules.

The organizations AI Forensics, Center for Democracy and Technology Europe, Entropy, European Digital Rights, Gesellschaft f\"ur Freiheitsrechte eV. (GFF), Global Witness, Panoptykon Foundation, Stichting Bits of Freedom, and VoxPublic stated that they filed their complaint with the European Commission and French media regulator Arcom, on Monday, July 14.

They urged the two regulators to take action under the Digital Services Act (DSA), a law that prohibits advertising based on sensitive user data such as religion, race, and sexuality.

X, the European Commission, and Arcom have not responded immediately to requests for comment via email on this news.

"We express our deep concern regarding the use of sensitive personal user data by X for targeted advertising," the organizations said in a statement.

They explained that their concerns arose after they reviewed Ad Repository X, a publicly available database created by the company as part of the DSA requirements.

"We found that big brands as well as public and financial institutions are involved in targeted online advertising based on what appears to be a special category of personal data, protected by Article 9 of the GDPR, such as political views, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and health conditions," they added.

The group asked regulators to investigate X. GDPR refers to the EU data privacy law.
