JAKARTA - Indonesia invites the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) or Southeast Asian countries to combat the spread of negative content and hoaxes, especially on the impact on children.

This was said directly by the Director General of Public Communication and Media of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Fifi Aleyda Yahya, at the 17th ASEAN Ministers Response for Information (AMRI) meeting in Brunei Darussalam.

Fifi emphasized that the meeting was a strategic momentum for ASEAN countries to align policies in the information sector, especially in the midst of rapid development of digital technology.

On that occasion, Fifi as Indonesia's representative also explained the initiative of the National Digital Literacy Movement (GNLD) as a model for ASEAN in building community resilience to misinformation.

"Digital literacy is not only technical skills, but also the foundation to build critical thinking. ASEAN must move together to ensure that the public is able to filter information independently," said Fifi.

According to him, the program is very relevant to the MAJU vision which means 'forward' in Indonesian, as well as an acronym of media efforts to advance mutual understanding.

Along with this vision, Fifi revealed that Indonesia already has a new policy that regulates the age limit for using social media for children.

This policy is regulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number 21 of 2025 concerning Governance for the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP TUNAS) which regulates child protection in the online realm.

"Children are ASEAN's next generation. We cannot ignore the threat of negative content they face," said Fifi.

The policy received support from a number of member countries, marking the importance of cross-border media collaboration in creating a secure digital ecosystem.

On the other hand, Indonesia invites technology and media companies in ASEAN to invest in quality journalism through regulations that encourage the accountability of digital platforms.

"A precise information is the backbone of democracy. Without support for quality journalism, hoaxes will continue to run rampant," he added.
