JAKARTA - Google officially started rolling out the Material 3-based Gmail redesign for iPhone and iPad users, after going through the trial phase earlier this year. This new design features visual refreshers that have been available in the Android version of the Google app and the web, while adoption on iOS is somewhat slower.
One of the most striking changes is the presence of a pill-shaped search bar that replaces the previous round of squares. In addition, the bottom navigation bar that appears if the user activates integration with Google Chat and/or Google Meet now also uses pill-shaped indicators to show the active tab, not just highlight the icon.
The "Compose" (Tulis) button is now in the form of a rectangular with a round angle, and the blue color is used as the main accent color across the app, replacing the red dominance that was previously synonymous with Gmail.
However, navigation drawer featuring folders and user labels still does not experience significant changes. On the message display, one of the small adjustments is the three-dot icon for additional options now displayed horizontally, not vertically as before.

This redesign comes through an update version 6.0.250413 and is claimed to bring views and nuances that are in line with the experience of Gmail users on Android and the web. Overall, this update is a fairly simple but consistent modernization step.
Apart from Gmail, Google has also brought Material 3 to several other iOS applications such as Google Chat, Home, Maps, Meet, Photos, and Search.
Meanwhile, the Google Calendar app for iOS, which is still using the old design language, is reportedly preparing to launch a new feature that allows users to create and edit birthday events directly. The Birthday option will appear when creating new events, alongside Events and Tasks, although this feature is not yet widely available for now
