JAKARTA Apple is developing the Apple Intelligence feature by presenting AirPods equipped with a built-in camera.
One of the latest innovations in Apple Intelligence is Visual Intelligence, a feature that allows users to obtain real-world object information and details using the iPhone 16 camera. However, the Cupertino-based company is now considering a new approach that does not require users to direct iPhone cameras to specific objects.
According to Mark Gurman's report in a Bloomberg bulletin on Sunday, March 9, Apple is "actively developing" a product that combines AirPods with cameras. This camera will later be able to collect environmental data and be used for AI-based features.
For example, users can ask their location, and AirPods will scan nearby signs or signages to accurately determine the location. Even this camera can be used to help users find stores based on the front view of the shop.
AirPods development with cameras may sound unusual, but this concept has emerged in some previous rumors. Apart from Gurman's January 2025 report, these rumors also circulated in October and December 2024, with launch forecasts in the next two to three years.
Interestingly, the camera to be used may not be a full-colored version, but uses an infrared sensor for depth mapping. This technology is more power efficient and more optimal for navigation than high-resolution video cameras.
Some may think that this feature is more suitable for smart glasses, such as Apple Glass which is often rumored. However, adding cameras to AirPods can be a more efficient solution than smart glasses.

Some of the main advantages of this concept include:
- The point of view is wider, compared to the front camera on smart glasses.- Reduce weight on the device, so it remains comfortable to use for a long time. - Alternatives for users who don't want to wear smart glasses, especially for those who are already wearing regular or uncomfortable glasses with the device on the face.
The Future Of AirPods With Cameras
Apple is not the first to add additional sensors to its audio products. Previously, Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 was equipped with blood monitoring sensors on each earbud, which was connected to the iPhone.
If Apple manages to develop AirPods with cameras that can "look" the environment and provide audio feedback, this could be a smart alternative for users who want to enjoy AI features without having to wear smart glasses.
If this innovation is successfully accepted by the market, Apple may have found a major breakthrough in wearable AI devices.
