Apple's Smart Glasses Are Still Far From Reality, Apple Considers Wearable Future

JAKARTA - Apple is still looking for the best way to develop its wearable device. This includes the possibility of switching from the Apple Vision Pro headset which is considered a commercial failure to Apple Glass smart glasses which are predicted to only arrive in 2030.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg written by Mark Gurman on Sunday, March 9, the Cupertino-based company is now exploring various form factors for augmented reality (AR) devices. After canceling the AR glasses project as an external screen for Macs in early 2025, the company is now reconsidering developing self-adjoint AR glasses.

The report estimates that Apple will take another three to five years before it can release a commercial version of Apple Glass. In addition, the company is also reportedly developing a similar device with Ray-Ban Meta glasses, but without AR features. Instead, this device is likely to be equipped with cameras, microphones, audio, and artificial intelligence (AI).

To realize smart glasses like Apple Glass, Apple has to face various technical challenges, including making the device quite light but still functioning optimally. One of the biggest challenges is how to enter batteries and other hardware components without making the device big and heavy.

Apple has several special teams working to develop this concept, including doing research on integrable features into the device. The prototype of these glasses has been tested for years under very secret conditions, even for Apple's own standards.

In 2017, a report from Apple's contractor in the field of Health and Environmental Safety revealed that an employee required further medical treatment after testing one of the prototypes of this device a rare indication that Apple was developing smart glasses.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has long believed that AR glasses are the future compared to VR headsets like Apple Vision Pro. According to him, technology that allows users to view digital information without being isolated from the real world is much more interesting and useful.

However, after billions of dollars invested in research, Apple is still struggling to find the ideal solution for this device. If this project really does materialize, Apple Glass may only be available in the next few years, marking a new era in the world of wearable technology.
