Want To Compete With CapCut, Instagram Launches Edits App

JAKARTA Instagram seems to want to compete with TikTok from various sides. After changing the content thumbnail on the profile page, the company is now launching a video editing app like CapCut.

The application, named Edits, is designed to make it easier for Instagram creators, especially Reels. In accordance with the statement by the Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, on his personal Threads account, Edits can only be used on mobile phones for now.

"Today we are announcing a new application called 'Edits' for those of you who like to make videos on your phone. There are many things that are happening right now, but whatever happens, our job is to provide the best tools for creators," Mosseri said on Monday, January 20.

Instagram is trying to make Edits more than just a video editing application. Although the original goal is for video editing, users can also access special tabs for inspiration and high-quality camera features.

In addition, there are also interesting capabilities such as sharing drafts with friends and insights about videos shared on Instagram. This insight includes details of the involvement of followers and non-followers as well as how often users miss content.

In another post, Mosseri explained that Instagram had been developing the app for months. The Instagram official stressed that Edits would be a different app when compared to CapCut.

"I think the results will be very different from CapCut. Editing will have a much wider range of creative tools and maybe less intended audiences. Think of a place to track all your ideas, not templates," Mosseri said.

The app has been released, but cannot be downloaded until February. For a few weeks, Instagram will test the app first with some creators to improve the experience. After that, Instagram will expand its features to Android devices.
