Previously, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella visited Indonesia to meet President Joko Widodo. The meeting discussed the interests of Microsft, which plans to build a data center in RI. The visit took place in 2020. Microsoft poured funds of 1 billion US dollars to realize the plan to build the first data center in the country.
The Ministry of Communication and Informatics immediately responded to this matter, which was preparing to formulate a Ministerial Regulation (PM) so that Microsoft could build its data center without a hitch.
Jean-Philippe Courtois as Executive Vice President and President, Microsoft Global Sales, Marketing and Operations, said that the plan to establish a data center in RI is the most significant investment in Microsoft's history, which has been present for 26 years in RI.
"With a local data center, businesses will have faster access to cloud services and the ability to store data in the country," said Cortois.
However, until now Microsoft has not announced more detailed information regarding when and where the data center will be established. The company founded by Bill Gates only promises that Microsoft's data center in RI will become Microsoft's global cloud infrastructure or Microsoft Azure.
Until now, the company from the United States has 60 data centers located in various countries. The existence of this data center can enable Indonesian customers to get fast access to the Microsoft cloud. Customers can also store data safely in Indonesia.
According to the Ministry of Communication and Information, this plan was responded well by the Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G. Plate. He said that the existence of this data center would provide benefits for local entrepreneurs, the public and the government in all fields.
"As a cloud solution provider, Microsoft's investment in building local data centers, digital skills, and collaboration with the Indonesian government will support local innovation, economic recovery and digital transformation," said Johnny.
Meanwhile, according to Haris Izme, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, said that currently there are large companies using Microsoft Azure, namely Bukalapak, the Ministry of Agriculture, and Pertamina.
Microsoft Azure provides services that span computing, databases, analytics, networking, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
