JAKARTA - OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT's artificial intelligence chatbot, has launched an initiative to bring more democratic participation in the development of artificial intelligence.

In an official announcement on May 25, the company said it was preparing to provide 10 grants worth US$100,000 (Rp1.5 billion) each for experiments in establishing a "proof-of-concept" process, democratically to determine the rules that artificial intelligence systems must follow.

According to OpenAI, these rules must be "in the limits set by law" and must provide benefits to humanity.

"This grant is a step to form a democratic process in monitoring AGI and, in the end, superintelegency," said OpenAI.

The company says those experiments will form the basis for more "global" and "ambitious" projects in the future. OpenAI also notes that the conclusions of these experiments are non-binding, but will be used to explore important questions about artificial intelligence governance.

This grant is provided by a non-profit organization from OpenAI. The company says that project results will be freely accessed by the public.

This comes as governments around the world seek to implement regulations on general generative artificial intelligence. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently met with regulators in Europe to emphasize the importance of regulations that do not limit and do not hinder innovation.

A week earlier, Altman testified before the United States Congress with a similar message.

In announcing this new grant program, OpenAI emphasized that the law should be adapted to the technology, and artificial intelligence requires "more complicated and adaptive guidelines for its behavior."

The company provides an example of a question, such as "How does the debated views have to be represented in the output of artificial intelligence?" After that, OpenAI said that no one, whether individual, corporate, or state, should make such decisions.

Previously, OpenAI had warned that if artificial intelligence was not developed carefully, a form of superhuman artificial intelligence could emerge within ten years. Therefore, developers "must do it right."
