JAKARTA - On February 18, NASA's Perseverance rover robot will land on the surface of the planet Mars, since it was launched on July 30, 2020. The Preseverance rover robot is equipped with a number of new tools and technologies to be able to explore the red planet.
NASA provides Perseverance with a microphone embedded in its SuperCam instrument. Later, NASA will be able to record sound for natural exploration of the Red planet, as quoted from Slashgear, Thursday, January 14
When Perseverance reaches the surface of Mars in the next month, it will immediately land on the surface of the planet. The landing process will be captured by a second microphone called EDL (entry, descent, landing). NASA stated that the microphone was part of the experiment. The device is an ordinary microphone equipped with a special grid to prevent dust from entering.
Upon landing, the SuperCam microphone will immediately pick up ambient sound. This incident is an important event for mankind. It is likely that the sound heard through the microphone catch will not sound so clear when compared to human hearing that descends directly to the planet.
The reason has to do with the density of the atmosphere, composition and temperature of the planet Mars. Previously, tools such as microphones had never been used for planetary exploration.
This tool can provide new experiences in exploration and can be used to study the Martian environment. Including new things, such as hearing voices around the planet.
Baptiste Chide, a planetary researcher from NASA, said, "It's amazing, all the knowledge we can get from a simple instrument like a microphone on Mars ... Recording sounds that can be heard on Mars is a unique experience."
