Who Is Sandiaga Uno Who Was Chosen As The Minister Of Tourism And Creative Economy

JAKARTA - Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno. Former Jakarta deputy governor and vice presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. Sandiaga Uno is a top entrepreneur in Indonesia. In the 2020 Jokowi-Maruf cabinet reshuffle, Sandiaga was given the mandate to become Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy replacing Wishnutama.

Sandi's name started sticking out in the political world after succeeding in becoming Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta with Anies Baswedan in 2017. But he left the Deputy Governor seat to contest the 2019 Presidential Election (Pilpres) with Prabowo Subianto.

Born in Pekanbaru on June 28, 1969, Sandiaga Uno is the last of two children of the pair Razif Halik Uno (Henk) and Rachmini Rachman (Mien). Sandiaga married in 1996 to Nur Asiah and from this marriage he is blessed with three children; Anneesha Atheera Uno, Amyra Atheefa Uno, and Sulaiman Saladdin Uno.

As said before, before working in the political world, Sandiaga Uno was known as a businessman. On one occasion, Sandiaga said that the beginning of his business career began with the work of financial consultants. In 1997 when Indonesia was hit by a crisis, Sandiaga admitted that he was a victim of layoffs at his place of work. He then looked for a new job but it did not bear fruit.

The beginning of his career as a financial consultant was not smooth. It is not uncommon for Sandiaga to be underestimated by the companies that use his services.

"It was difficult at that time. Because it was assumed that the children who gave advice were groups of children to big companies, we called them yesterday afternoon. One hour of presentation, 45 minutes spent to convince them," Sandiaga said, quoted from Detik.

But that doesn't mean Sandiaga just gave up. Until finally after 6 months of experiencing difficulties, a company used Sandiaga's services.

In 1998 together with his best friend, Edwin Soerjadjaja, Sandiaga then founded Saratoga Capital. The company is engaged in natural resources and infrastructure.

Quoting Warta Ekonomi, Saratoga works by collecting investments to acquire 'sick' companies and then improving the company's performance. After the company improves, the company's assets are sold at a higher price. Companies that have been successfully managed by Saratoga and resold are PT Dipasena Citra Darmaja, PT BTPN, and PT Astra Microtronics.

Sandiaga Uno was named the richest person in Indonesia number 122 by Globe Asia Magazine. In 2011, Sandiaga was also named the richest person No. 37 in Indonesia according to Forbes magazine.

Get into politics

In mid-2015, Sandiaga Uno is known to have joined the Gerindra Party. He decided to join the Gerindra Party when he was about to run in the DKI Jakarta Regional Election to accompany Anies Baswedan. When joining Gerindra, Sandiaga served as Deputy Chairman of the Gerindra Board of Trustees. He also gave up various positions he had in his company.

In 2017, Sandiaga Uno won the DKI Jakarta Regional Election with Anies Baswedan. Anies-Sandi won 57.96 percent of votes in the second round defeating Ahok-DJarot. He and Anies Baswedan were inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on October 16, 2017. However, Sandiaga Uno only held the post for 10 months. Sandiaga officially resigned as Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta and accompanied Prabowo Subianto in the 2019 Presidential Election.

The Sandiaga Uno controversy

Famously polite and young at heart, Sandiaga Uno is not spared from being controversial. When he became running mate, Sandiaga was known to have visited campuses. Sandiaga went on a safari to the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta and Dr. Hamka. Activities that were considered political when Sandiaga was at UMJ together with PAN Ketum Zulkifli Hasan, Zulkifli Hasan said "Simple presidential election, change president and continue president." This incident was known as "Campus Politics."

When he became running mate, Sandiaga Uno also discussed the soaring prices of a number of basic commodities. Sandiaga then said that due to the increasing price, the size of tempeh was made as thin as an ATM.

"We are very worried, concerned about the economic situation and we want to voice the aspirations of the people. He said Tempe is now reduced and thin is almost the same as an ATM card," Sandiaga said.

Sandiaga Uno then made another controversial statement by comparing the price of chicken rice in Indonesia and Singapore. Sandi said that the price of chicken rice in Indonesia is more expensive than in Singapore.

"A plate of chicken rice costs 3.5 dollars (Singapore) or Rp. 35 thousand, but here it is Rp. 50 thousand, there is one thing that we need to fix from the price of our basic necessities," Sandiaga said. He said that this was based on data from the World Bank.

Sandiaga Uno has also clashed with former Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti. At that time, Sandiaga, who was campaigning in Indramayu Regency, West Java, received a complaint from the Chairman of the Mina Sumitra Cooperative, Darto. He admitted that it was difficult to obtain a fishing permit (SIPI). Darto admitted that SIPI management took a long time and had an impact on fishing activities.

Sandiaga Uno, who is famous for the OKOCE program, then criticized SIPI for the long process. Susi did not remain silent, saying the KKP since 7 November 2014 has released all ship permits under 10 GT. Meanwhile for the 10 GT-30 GT the permit is not in the ministry, but in the provinces.

"So don't just talk first. Study and read the new Fisheries Law comment. I don't like the fisheries economy sectoral issue being brought to the political sphere. I am angry and this has been reminded," said Susi.
