Telkomsel reportedly took Ericsson and Qualcomm to conduct a trial of Permanent Wireless Access Service or Fixed Wireless Access (FWA).

The test used 5G extended-range technology with a bandwidth of 800 MHz at a 26 GHz millimeter-wave frequency which was temporarily permitted for trial by the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo).

The wide reach advantage, high capacity and low latency capability of 5G mmWave offer great potential for the application of FWA technology and encourage equitableness, improvement, and acceleration of national digital transformation.

"Together with our infrastructure and technology provider partners, Ericsson and Qualcomm, Telkomsel continue to collaborate to remain relevant in every application of the latest network technology, one of which is through a trial of implementing 5G mmWave network technology in the Lake Toba area," said Telkomsel Planning and Transformation Director Wong Soon Nam in his official statement quoted Wednesday, November 30.

Based on the test results, the download speed can still reach peak throughput 1 Gbps even though the distance has reached 7.9 Kilometers in the Lake Toba area, North Sumatra Province.

These results show that an extended 5G millimeter-wave at a frequency of 26 GHz can be one of the useful solutions for FWA services in supporting the development of various digital solutions.

The Lake Toba area itself is one of the Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP) with 5G services that have been appointed by the Ministry of Communication and Information and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf).

This extraordinary result from the FWA trial with an extended 5G mmWave can help overcome the challenges of bridging the digital gap and reducing the carbon footprint of cellular networks, said Head of Ericsson Indonesia, Jerry Soper.

Digital connectivity that has been evenly distributed and built by Telkomsel is expected to continue to help businesses in Indonesia to simplify operations and reduce costs, thereby increasing efficiency and productivity.

5G technology can also play an important role in achieving Indonesia's digital inclusion goals, especially in presenting leading digital connectivity, including in remote rural areas.

"By providing operators and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with cost-effective technology and reaching all points, we can empower consumers and companies with the best 5G connectivity for home and business, including those who were already in an area that was previously located at 5G," concluded Qualcomm Indonesia Country Director Shannedy Ong.
