JAKARTA - The number of internet users in Indonesia in January 2022 was reported to have grown to 204.7 million. This is due to the collaboration of the rapid development of technology, the provision of digital infrastructure and the improvement of digital services.

This figure is also supported by the internet penetration rate which reaches 73.7 percent of the total population. This situation supports the growth of the digital space which is a place for people to be active and creative. However, at the same time, it also presents the potential for cyber-attack crimes.

President Director of PT ITSEC Asia, Andri Hutama Putra explained that the digital space and the real world are two spaces that are interconnected with one another.

"What we do in the digital space will affect the real world and the impact of digital attacks will be as bad or even more fatal than the impact of attacks in the real world," Andri said in a statement quoted on Sunday, May 22.

In addition, the National Cyber and Passwords Agency (BSSN) noted that there were at least 1.6 billion more traffic anomalies or cyber attacks that occurred in Indonesia in 2021, where this trend is also predicted to increase this year, with malware potentially being the most common type of cyber attack. many.

It should be noted that cyber attacks not only have the potential to attack large companies or institutions, but also individuals as one of the vulnerable targets for cyber attacks.

"It's not uncommon to see Indonesians being hacked, using fake identities, or even being held hostage by cybercriminals," said Andri.

To that end, Andri shared some tips so that people can stay safe in the digital space. Here are the tips.

1. Create a Strong Password and Change it Periodically

Use strong passwords. Combine passwords with uppercase letters, numbers, or punctuation so that your password is not easily guessed. Change passwords regularly

2. Categorize Email

Differentiate the email address used according to their respective needs. For example, business, personal or social media, financial transactions, and others.

Using one email for all needs will put more risk for our other accounts if one of the accounts is hacked. Categorizing email usage makes it easier to spot suspicious activity from incoming emails.

3. Enable Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA is a double security feature for application access to prevent unwanted login access from others. Monitor any suspicious activity or account login attempts by other parties that we do not know.

4. Enable Notification Features

Enabling the notification feature can immediately detect suspicious logins or activity. In digital transactions, the notification feature can be used to find out if there is an account breach or unknown transaction

5. Beware of Opening Suspicious Emails, Links and Downloading Apps

Do not carelessly open suspicious links in email messages, this is to avoid phishing attacks that hack information such as login data. Do not download applications that are not from the official website.

Usually some cybercriminals use fake websites to lure people to download faked apps/features, and from there cybercriminals can steal people's personal data.

6. Avoid Login with Unknown Device

Devices that we do not recognize are like other people's gadgets or computers that are used by the public. We do not know whether the device has been infected with a virus or not, therefore we should as much as possible avoid using other devices to access our account. Don't forget to log out.

7. Get to know the Application Security Features

Many application security features have been provided and can be activated easily such as Apple Touch ID, Face ID, additional 2FA, Privacy Settings, Report & Block, Account Login Alerts, Temporary Messages, and others.
