JAKARTA – In the midst of the increasing trend of crypto and non-fungible tokens (NFT), Opera launched a special browser for crypto currencies based on Web3, dubbed Crypto Browser.

This browser application is a new version of a similar browser that Opera launched in 2018. Opera Crypto Browser works across a variety of decentralized applications or dApps, and provides deeper functionality than traditional browsers.

"The goal (Crypto Browser) is to simplify the Web3 user experience that often confuses mainstream users," said Opera EVP Jorgen Arnensen.

Now Opera Crypto Browser is available in beta on Windows, Mac, and Android, with an iOS version coming soon. This browser has Web3 integration which is basically to make working with blockchain easier.

“Too few web browsing experiences offered today have been built with the aim of putting Web3 at the center of attention and making blockchain technology understandable and easy to use. With the Crypto Browser Project, we have set out to change this, and starting today, we are inviting the blockchain community to join this mission," said Arnensen.

Launching ZDNet, Thursday, October 20, Opera Crypto Browser will support blockchains including Bitcoin, Celo, Ethereum, and Nervos, with plans to add more in the future.

Later, Crypto Browser will include a native crypto non-custodial wallet that will allow users to access crypto directly within the browser without having to install any extensions.

Opera says that this new wallet will eventually replace wallet solutions in other browsers. Apart from that, the new browser also includes a secure clipboard that allows users to safely copy and paste without worrying about security.

Another standout feature of this new browser is the Crypto Corner, which contains all the latest blockchain news, crypto-related podcasts and vlogs, as well as tracking upcoming crypto airdrops and events. The browser also comes with a sidebar that takes users to Crypto Twitter, Discord, Reddit, and more, as well as Telegram and Whatsapp.

Apart from providing extra security through blockchain encryption, the browser also allows users to access things like GameFi, where users can earn while playing through all sorts of metaverses.

It should be noted that Opera is also currently implementing a more energy efficient layer within the browser, known as Etherium Layer 2. This type of Layer 2 adoption provides a way to transact and run dApps in a more environmentally conscious manner.

The environmental impact of blockchain on high energy consumption has been criticized for its annual electricity usage, powering only Bitcoins reportedly draining 134 TWh of power.

Even with concerns about the environmental impact of the rise of crypto, it is estimated that 90 percent of the global population will adopt crypto within the next decade. In just the last few years alone, the crypto market has grown from $1.44 billion in 2020 to $1.63 billion in 2021.
