JAKARTA - It has been seven years since David Beckham left the world of football. Now, the former England captain is starting to try his new luck in the world of e-Sports.

Beckham is reported to have joined and become the Co-Owner of an e-Sports startup, called Guild ESports. Beckham has even invested 25 million Euros or around Rp.400 billion.

"I am committed to nurturing and encouraging talented talents through the academy system that is offered to support the advancement of the Guild e-Sports team," Beckham said in a statement, as quoted by Esports Insider, Tuesday, June 30.

Executive Chairman of Guild Esports, Carleton Curtis, in his statement welcomed David Beckham's presence as Co-Owner in this business. "Because of his professionalism and experience he can build a best-in-class e-Sports sports team."

The Guild Esports, based in London, England, focuses on gaming competitions such as Rocket League, FIFA, and Fortnite. Not only competing, this Guild will also operate as an academy to produce young talent for professional e-Sports athletes.

"Later, Beckham will be involved to help compile a program that will be implemented in our academy. Of course we welcome Beckham because he is an inspiration for young athletes," said Curtis.

e-Sports has now developed into a popular sports industry. Even before David Bechkam, a number of famous football players such as Mesut Ozil, Gareth Bale and Ronaldinho had also built their own clubs and e-Sports organizations.

So it's no wonder that the husband of Victoria Beckham is eyeing this business. Moreover, the global e-sports market is currently valued at around 1.1 billion or around Rp. 15.7 trillion and is expected to grow by 42 percent in 2023, with a turnover of up to US $ 1.56 billion (Rp. 22 trillion).
