JAKARTA - PlayStation 5 (PS5) owners can reportedly buy a new console with a 20 percent discount. Dubbed the Goodwill Discount program, Sony says one of the conditions is if their PS5 suffers physical damage.

Sony added, PS5 owners don't have to pay full price for a new console if their damaged old console is still under warranty. The program refers to a report by IGN India that found PlayStation 5 owners in India experiencing a malfunction in the HDMI port.

Then Sony offered them the option to buy a new console at 80 percent off its cost which is 39,992 rupees instead of 49,990 rupees, but as long as the defective console is still within the warranty period.

Owners of the broken PS5 were not given the option of repairing the console but instead buying a new one. Sony has confirmed this is a Goodwill Discount program for customers who have suffered physical damage to their consoles.

"For physically damaged products, we encourage customers to buy new products, by offering a Goodwill Discount," said a Sony spokesperson as quoted by Gadget NDTV, Friday, July 30.

Sony admits it will cost more to repair a broken HDMI port than buying a new PS5 at a 20 percent discount.

The report also notes that this policy has been in place since the PlayStation 3 and will likely remain in effect until Sony brings official internal repair and warranty extensions to the country. This may happen once the sales figures are high in other markets.

Meanwhile, the company recently announced that it has sold more than 10 million PS5 consoles globally since its launch at the end of last year. Admittedly, the PS5 is the fastest selling console in the history of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).

"Propelling through supply challenges and the global pandemic, we are proud to have delivered a transformational gaming experience that captivates players around the world," said Veronica Rogers, SVP of Global Sales and Business Operations at Sony.
