JAKARTA - The team formed by former President Donald Trump quietly launched a new social media platform on Thursday, July 2. They call this platform an alternative to Big Tech sites.

However, his debut immediately beckons questions. Whether the platform is an offer from the former president as he has long promised to offer his millions of followers their own social media haven or just the next attempt to establish an alternative to MAGA as the main platform.

The site, called GETTR, advertises its mission statement as "fighting cancel culture, promoting common sense, defending free speech, challenging social media monopoly, and creating a true marketplace of ideas." The app is currently still in beta and will officially launch on July 4th at 10am US time.

Trump's former spokesman, Jason Miller, who was appointed to lead the platform, confirmed this via text to the media. Former Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh is also involved as a consultant on the app.

Trump's involvement with the project is unclear as to whether he will create an account on GETTR and use it or not.

"The former president will make his own decisions, it's definitely there and ready for him if he makes a decision and we will welcome him. There was an account reserved for him and it was waiting for him. But it is a decision he has to make,” said a person involved with the app.

The former president Trump has been looking for alternative ways for him to engage with his headquarters online after his official account was removed from Twitter and suspended from Facebook.

Trump's previous attempts to engage online, through the launch of a professional blog, ended quickly amid widespread ridicule and poor readership. The new venture could also raise questions about privacy, including whether it collects information about its users' Twitter followers.

GETTR is one of the highest profile projects in the larger ecosystem of pro-MAGA technology and social media platforms. It is also largely driven by the sentiment that there is “Big Tech” trying to silence conservative and pro-Trump ideologies from being spread online.

In recent months, it has been widely reported that the Trump team is looking for a platform to rebuild its online presence, either by buying the company outright then rebranding it as its exclusive platform, or creating a new one to become the flagship platform.

The GETTR app first went live on the Google Store and Apple Store in mid-June and was last updated last Wednesday. Each has been downloaded more than a thousand times.

The description for GETTR in the app store calls it "a non-biased social network for people around the world." This app is rated "M" for adults, which means it is recommended for users aged 17 and over.

The name GETTR is inspired by the words “Getting Together.” Posts will be 777 characters long. The app will also host videos up to three minutes long, and will also be able to host live streams. The base or office of this application is located in New York.
