JAKARTA - Along with the launch of the latest smartphones, the demand for flexible OLED display panels is known to increase. But in reality, a report by market research company Omdia actually shows a drastic decline in demand.
Compiled from Gizmochina, Tuesday 29 June, shipments of flexible OLED panels will be around 57 million units for the second quarter of this year. That means, shipments will experience a decline of 35 percent when compared to the previous quarter.
The decline is attributed to the second quarter of 2021, excluding the holiday season and a drop in shipments of Apple iPhone models. However, when compared to the annual period (YoY), it represents an impressive 54 percent increase.
Omdia also added that shipments of rigid (conventional) OLED panels will be around 53 million units in the second quarter of 2021. On the other hand, Omdia claims Samsung Display can ship more than 39.1 million units of flexible OLED panels in the second quarter of this year, which is a a decrease of 42.8 percent from the previous quarter and an annual increase of 61.6 percent.
Meanwhile, LG Display is expected to ship 10.6 million units, representing a 41.1 percent decline from the previous quarter and a 55.9 percent YoY increase.
Meanwhile, companies BOE, CSOT, Vsionox, and Tianma are expected to ship 7.9 million units, 3.1 million units, 2.1 million units and 1.4 million units respectively in the second quarter of 2021.
Previously, Samsung was one of the few phone manufacturers to use flexible OLED panels for Galaxy S and Note series devices, along with Huawei and Apple. Unfortunately that is changing nowadays, with more brands adopting the panel.
With increasing demand, manufacturers for flexible OLED panels are also increasing as BOE and CSOT increase their production capacity to compete with market leaders such as Samsung Display.
