China announced the discovery of two new minerals from the Moon. This discovery adds to the list of Moon minerals that the world has identified to eight.
The Chang'e-5 mission returned to Earth in December 2020 with about 1,731 grams of lunar samples. It was China's first lunar sample, as well as the first lunar sample to be successfully brought back to Earth in 44 years.
The China National Space Administration or CNSA identified the two new minerals as magnesiochangesite-(Y) and changesite-(Ce), which are minerals that are said to contain rare earth elements.
Previously, China found its first lunar mineral, changesite-(Y), in 2022.
CNSA conveyed the findings at the opening of Space Day of China 2026 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The two minerals have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association.
China also made history in 2019 after the Chang'e-4 probe became the first to land on the far side of the Moon.
