JAKARTA - Meta announced that it will introduce a new fraud detection tool to a number of its platforms. Some of these applications include Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

The addition of this detection tool is carried out to provide early warning to users before being trapped in harmful cyber activities. Meta also deliberately chose the three platforms because of the risk of fraud that is vulnerable in chat rooms.

On Facebook, Meta is starting to test an automatic warning system on friendship requests that are considered high risk. Users will receive a notification if the account that contacted them has few mutual friends or a striking location difference.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp will get a security feature when linking a new device to prevent account takeover. The system will detect unnatural signs and warn users if the linking request is suspected as a hacker tactic.

"WhatsApp will now tell you when behavioral signals indicate that a linking request may be suspicious," Meta said in its official statement, quoted on Thursday, March 12.

For Messenger, Meta will use advanced fraud detection features supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI). This technology is able to recognize patterns of conversations that are often used in the mode of fraudulent job vacancies or bogus investments.

If AI finds a match with a pattern of fraud, the system will suggest that users block or report the account. Users can also share the message with Meta's digital security team for further review.
