JAKARTA - Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that Apple will not change its privacy policy even though it has partnered with Google in developing artificial intelligence (AI) through the Gemini model.
In an interview with CNBC ahead of this week's quarterly financial performance, Cook confirmed that Apple Intelligence continues to operate using Apple Foundation Models that run directly on devices (on-device) as well as through Apple's Private Cloud Compute system.
"We are not changing our privacy rules. The architecture we use is still the same as previously announced, namely processing on devices and Private Cloud Compute," Cook said.
Apple previously confirmed its cooperation with Google to utilize the Gemini AI model in the training and strengthening process of Apple Foundation Models. However, Cook emphasized that users will not interact directly with Gemini, but will continue to use Apple's AI technology.
According to a number of reports, Apple utilizes the Gemini model with a capacity of around 1.2 trillion parameters as part of the training process. The end result is still an Apple model that is run locally on the device or through Apple's private cloud infrastructure.
The initial launch of the upgraded Apple Intelligence, including the latest version of the more personal Siri, is expected to come with the iOS 26.4 operating system. Siri is said to have the ability to be closer to large language models (LLM), but still prioritize user data protection.
At WWDC 2026, Apple is also expected to announce further updates to Siri, including more natural conversation capabilities and responses that adjust to the user's tone and emotions.
Meanwhile, there is speculation that the limited supply of high-performance chip components - which Nvidia is also interested in - could affect Apple's server capacity. In this scenario, Apple is said to have the potential to rent Google's servers to support Private Cloud Compute, but still run its own AI model.
Cook emphasized that Apple would not disclose technical details of its cooperation with Google to the public. He assessed that transparency related to privacy remained the company's main commitment.
"Users still interact with Apple Intelligence powered by Apple Foundation Models, so privacy and data security are maintained," Cook said.
Apple considers this commitment important, given that any violation of a privacy promise could potentially lead to legal action and scrutiny from capital market authorities in the United States.
