JAKARTA - WhatsApp has officially launched a new security feature called Strict Account Settings as an effort to strengthen account protection from cyber attacks. This feature is designed specifically for high-risk users, such as journalists, activists, and public figures, who are often targets of sophisticated digital attacks in the era of social media.

At first glance, this feature is similar to Apple's Lockdown Mode on the iPhone. When activated, Strict Account Settings will lock a number of account settings to the strictest security level and cannot be manually changed by the user.

WhatsApp explains that this feature automatically blocks attachments and media sent by accounts that are not on the contact list. This step is considered effective in preventing the entry of spyware or dangerous files that are often inserted through messages.

In terms of account security, two-step verification will be immediately active and locked, as will security notifications that cannot be turned off. In addition, WhatsApp encourages the use of an encrypted end-to-end message backup for users who activate the backup feature.

Changes to Privacy and Interactions

When Strict Account Settings is active, several features will be restricted, including:

Link preview disabled

Mass messages from unknown accounts are automatically blocked

Profile information such as Last seen & online, profile photo, About, and profile link can only be seen by contacts or a list of people you have selected

Additions to the group can only be made by known contacts or a predefined list.

This restriction aims to minimize gaps that can be used for digital surveillance or social engineering-based attacks.

Not Accessible from WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp menegaskan bahwa Strict Account Settings tidak dapat diaktifkan maupun dikelola melalui WhatsApp Web. Fitur ini hanya bisa diakses dari perangkat utama, yakni ponsel pengguna.

Later, users can activate it through the menu: Settings > Privacy > Advanced

Launched Globally in Phases

WhatsApp said that this feature will be released globally in the next few weeks. Not all users will see this option immediately, because the launch is being done gradually.

As part of its security improvements, WhatsApp also revealed that it had started using the Rust programming language behind its system. This technology is intended to strengthen the protection of user data - including photos, videos, and messages - from threats such as spyware and system exploitation.

With the presence of Strict Account Settings, WhatsApp confirms its commitment to improving security, especially for users who need extra protection amid the increasing global cyber threats.
