JAKARTA - The mobile technology industry was surprised by the latest leak regarding Qualcomm's next-generation chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, which is rumored to bring an unprecedented performance boost.
Based on information from the well-known leaker on Weibo, Fixed Focus Digital, Qualcomm plans to launch two variants of the chipset this year, where the "Pro" variant will have a performance core with a minimum clock speed starting from 5.0GHz and even able to reach extreme numbers up to 6.0GHz.
In comparison, the current Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 only has a main core speed of around 4.6GHz, so this jump will make future smartphones have processing power equivalent to high-end desktop computers.
This massive performance leap is made possible thanks to the use of TSMC's 2nm fabrication process. 2nm technology allows for much higher transistor density and better energy efficiency, although its production costs are very expensive.
The price of one piece of silicon wafer for this technology is estimated to reach 30,000 US dollars or around Rp502.6 million. The high production cost has sparked speculation that the "Pro" version chipset with a speed of 6.0GHz will only be embedded in "Ultra" category phones or premium flagships whose prices are predicted to penetrate the figure above Rp20 million per unit.
One of the biggest challenges of such high speeds is the problem of overheating. Learning from the throttling problem in the previous generation, Qualcomm is reportedly adopting Samsung's Heat Pass Block (HPB) technology, which is also used in the Exynos 2600.
This technology is a sophisticated heat management system that is able to dissipate heat faster from the core components to the device's cooling system. With this thermal solution, the phone is expected to maintain peak performance of 5.0GHz to 6.0GHz for longer periods of time without making the device feel hot when held or used for heavy tasks such as heavy-duty gaming.
Although this leak is very tempting for technology enthusiasts, consumers still have to be patient because Qualcomm will only announce the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series in the third quarter of 2026.
Most of the flagship phones that launched earlier this year will still rely on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. However, with the arrival of the Pro variant that reaches 6.0GHz, the limit between the capabilities of smartphones and professional laptops is predicted to become thinner in the future.
