JAKARTA - The Director General of Digital Space Supervision, Ministry of Communication and Digital, Alexander Sabar, asked for an official explanation from Meta, regarding the issue of alleged leakage of Instagram user data.

The request for clarification comes following news where Malwarebytes previously revealed an alleged data leak of 17.5 Instagram users.

The suspicion arose when several users around the world reported receiving official emails from Meta asking them to reset their passwords.

In a meeting with Meta on January 14, Alex said that until now, Instagram is still conducting further investigations to ensure the validity of the issue.

Meta explained that the password reset process is an internal mechanism that runs through the official Instagram system and does not open password access to other parties.

"No user passwords can be accessed or obtained by any party other than the account owner himself, and there is no indication of misuse of the password reset feature for data extraction by external parties," Alex said in his statement quoted Sunday, January 18.

Alex emphasized that the summoning and clarification of the Electronic System Operator (PSE) is the authority of Komdigi as regulated in Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 concerning the Implementation of Electronic Systems and Transactions.

"The summons to Meta regarding this issue is part of the country's commitment to protecting the personal data of the public and maintaining the security of the national digital space," he said.

Komdigi urges the public to remain calm, not easily influenced by unverified information, and continue to increase vigilance in maintaining the security of their respective digital accounts.

Alex also emphasized that he would continue to monitor and take the necessary steps to ensure the security of electronic systems and the protection of personal data of Indonesian people.
