JAKARTA - Meta announced three major deals with startups, energy companies, and major nuclear reactor companies. Through these deals, Meta wants to supply electricity to data centers in the future.

The three companies that Meta partnered with are Vistra, Oklo, and TerraPower. The three will provide a total generating capacity of more than 6 gigawatts (GW) to meet the need for stable electricity.

The deal with Vistra is the most impactful because it leverages capacity from the Perry and Davis-Besse power plants in Ohio. Meta will purchase a total of 2.1 GW of nuclear power through a 20-year long-term contract.

Oklo, a start-up company backed by well-known investors, is expected to start supplying 1.2 GW of electricity to the grid as soon as 2030. They target operating costs of around 80 US dollars (Rp1.3 million) to 130 US dollars (Rp2.1 million) per megawatt-hour.

Meanwhile, TerraPower founded by Bill Gates will send electricity to Meta in early 2032. The company uses innovative liquid sodium technology to transfer energy from the reactor to an electric generator.

TerraPower has a larger cost target, which is around 50 US dollars (Rp840 thousand) to 60 US dollars (Rp1 million) per megawatt-hour. Meta has the right to increase orders to up to six additional reactor units from the company in the future.

Most of this electricity will be channeled through the PJM interconnection network which covers 13 states in the US. Meta also chose nuclear energy because of its ability to provide electricity that is stable for 24 hours without interruption.

That way, Meta will not experience a power supply disruption in its operations. Meta did not detail the total value of its investment, but this giant project is scheduled to start operating in the early 2030s.
