JAKARTA - Content on YouTube is very diverse and some of it is indeed made by AI. However, the latest report shows that about 21 percent of YouTube content is 'AI slop'.
AI slop is a term given to content made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is not of good quality. The circulation of this type of content is supported by video creation tools such as Sora and Veo which are increasingly sophisticated.
A report from video editing company Kapwing, launching from PC Mag, explains that the content found on YouTube is often of poor quality. From the research they did, 104 of the first 500 videos on the new account's homepage were AI-generated.
South Korea leads the way in AI-based entertainment consumption with a total of 8.25 billion views. One of its popular channels, Three Minutes Wisdom, has even amassed billions of views with photorealistic animal videos alone.
Pakistan ranked second with a total of 5.34 billion views on its most popular AI channels. Meanwhile, the United States came in third with similar content consumption reaching 3.39 billion views.
Interestingly, AI slop content in the United States is able to generate very large revenue for its creators. The Cuentos Facientes channel is estimated to have earned up to 2.66 million US dollars (Rp. 44 billion) even though the quality of the content is questionable.
The problem seems to have been realized by several platforms, including TikTok. The company has taken a firm step in overcoming AI slop by launching a feature that can help users filter AI content from their feed.
This trend is a major challenge for the future of the digital ecosystem to maintain the authenticity and quality of information. YouTube users or other platforms are now required to be smarter in distinguishing human works from AI-generated results.
