JAKARTA - Instagram announced changes to the hashtag or hashtag system on its platform. Now, all users are only allowed to upload five hashtags per post.

This new hashtag usage system applies to both regular posts and Reels. Through this change, Meta's application wants to reduce visual distractions and optimize the quality of content on its platform.

"We're now limiting hashtags to a maximum of five per post. Although I know it may be tempting to use more, some specific tags actually perform better," said Instagram Head Adam Mosseri on his official channel on Friday, December 19.

Mosseri's statement is in line with user habits, especially accounts that try to reach a large audience, since Instagram was first released. Users often use many hashtags to enter the Explore feed.

Mosseri also emphasized that this habit is no longer relevant. Instead of going into Explore, the system will be confused in reading the target audience from the user's post. Therefore, Instagram limits its use.

"Quality is more important than quantity. A quick reminder: Although hashtags help search, hashtags do not increase your reach. Focus on what type of content is right for your audience, that's really important," said Mosseri.

Instagram also prohibits the practice of sending spam through generic hashtags such as #reels or #explore. Using too many hashtags that are irrelevant can actually reduce the performance of content on the discovery page.
