JAKARTA - Google Messages' new feature called "Remix" has triggered widespread criticism from users. This AI-powered image editing feature, "Nano Banana", which allows users to modify photos directly in the chat, is considered intrusive because the large button appears floating above the image, blocking the view and disturbing the zoom gesture. Based on these online complaints, Google seems to be taking steps to reduce the level of disturbance of this feature.

Through the disassembly of the code (APK teardown) on the latest beta version of Google Messages (messages.android_20251212_00_RC01.phone.openbeta_dynamic), it was found that Google is testing the repositioning of the Remix button so that it is not too prominent.

Instead of hovering over the image by default - as it currently looks - Google is experimenting with moving Remix to a more contextual location within the app. In the beta version being tested, when users long press an image in a chat, the Remix option now appears as an option in the new context menu, no longer under the reaction bar.

Additionally, on the attachment screen, the Remix button has been shifted from the image preview to the left of the caption field, making it easier to ignore if the user is not interested in using it. Similarly, when viewing images in full media viewer, the Remix button is pushed down towards the lower left corner of the screen.

This change in placement shows that Google is responding to user feedback and reconsidering how aggressively they want to promote the Remix feature. While these adjustments may be welcome, it's worth noting that these found changes have not introduced a way to completely disable the Remix feature; the feature is still there throughout the image workflow, it's just not as frontal as before.

As with all findings from APK teardowns, there's no guarantee that these UI changes will be rolled out broadly, or whether they'll arrive in exactly the form found in the beta. However, the shift in position suggests that Google is at least listening to user feedback.
