JAKARTA Snap, the company that houses the Snapchat platform, will offer age verification options with Australian banks' software to set access limits to its platform.

This step is carried out in line with Australia which will prohibit children under the age of 16 from accessing social media. This rule will be enforced strictly from December for major social media, including Facebook and Instagram.

This rule was agreed last year, making Australia the first country to impose social media age restrictions for Big Tech. If this regulation is violated, the company will have to pay a fine of USD 49.5 million (IDR 533 billion).

Snap is the platform most affected by this regulation. The reason is, the company has about 440,000 Australian users aged 1315 years. However, Snap decided to stick to the restrictions.

Snap will start contacting users in the near future to offer a number of verification options. The main option offered is to click on the ConnectID software that is directly connected to their bank account.

ConnectID, which is used by most banks in Australia, will send a signal yes/no to the platform. This signal will confirm whether people with accounts are over the age of 16 based on the details of their bank accounts.

With this tool, users do not need to upload sensitive information. Apart from ConnectID, Snap will also provide users with the opportunity to confirm their age using k-ID software.

This Singapore-based software estimates a person's age by selfie or by uploading an identification card issued by the government. Even though it provides an age verification tool, Snap still objects to this regulation.

"While we strongly disagree with this assessment, we will comply as we do with all local laws in the country we operate on," Snap wrote in a post on its official website, reported Monday, November 24.
