JAKARTA - The generative artificial intelligence market is becoming increasingly competitive. While ChatGPT remains the market leader since its launch nearly three years ago, recent data shows that Gemini, Google's AI chatbot, is starting to catch up.

According to a Similarweb data report shared this week, Gemini doubled its share of web traffic last year, while ChatGPT's dominance is slowly eroding.

A year ago, ChatGPT controlled 86.6% of generative AI web traffic—a huge and unbeatable figure. Even today, ChatGPT still holds over 70% of traffic.

However, Gemini has reached a significant milestone. For the first time, Google's chatbot has captured more than 10% of traffic, positioning it as ChatGPT's strongest competitor in an increasingly crowded market.

Gemini: Steady, Consistent, and Now Significant Growth

Last year, Gemini accounted for only 5.6% of traffic. Six months ago, that figure rose slightly to 5.9%, amid the sudden rise in popularity of DeepSeek, which briefly displaced it.

But the trend is changing:

3 months ago: Gemini reached 8.6%

2 months ago: Rise again to 12.9% while ChatGPT dropped to 74.1%

Currently: Gemini holds 13.7%, while ChatGPT has fallen slightly to 72.3%

Interestingly, Gemini is the only AI platform to record sustained growth in every measurement period by Similarweb over the past year.

Other platforms—including DeepSeek and Perplexity—have experienced ups and downs, while Gemini continues to climb.

AI Market Competition is Fiercing

Since the emergence of ChatGPT in 2022, major companies such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity, Anthropic, and xAI have been competing to expand their share of the generative AI market.

While ChatGPT still leads by a large margin, recent trends suggest that its position is no longer unchallenged. Gemini's aggressive growth is an indicator that Google is gaining ground in the global AI competition.
