JAKARTA - OpenAI is testing a new feature called group chats, which will allow users to collaborate with friends, family, coworkers, and ChatGPT in the same conversation.
In its announcement, the company stated that these group chats will be separate from personal conversations, and your personal ChatGPT memories will not be shared with anyone in the chat.
This new feature is rolling out on mobile and web devices to ChatGPT users with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
"If you're planning a weekend trip with friends, create a group chat so ChatGPT can help compare destinations, organize itineraries, and create packing lists," OpenAI wrote on its official blog.
Furthermore, users can manage group members, name the group, set up notifications, and even provide specific instructions for ChatGPT in each group.
Don't forget, OpenAI too ChatGPT also adds extra protection for users under 18 by automatically reducing exposure to sensitive content and providing parents with the option to disable this feature.
"Responses are powered by GPT‑5.1 Auto, which selects the best model to respond based on the request and the models available to the user ChatGPT responds to based on their Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plan," it added.
OpenAI emphasized that group chats are the beginning of ChatGPT's transformation into a collaborative space for many people. The company will continue to adjust this feature based on user feedback during the trial period.
