JAKARTA Satellite service from Amazon has changed its name. The company says that Project Kuiper, a competitor to Starlink, has now officially changed its name to Amazon Leo.
Kuiper's project began seven years ago. Amazon says that this name is inspired by the Kuiper Belt, an asteroid ring that is in the outer solar system. Although initially only in the form of conceptual designs above hard, this name was finally maintained.
While using the name, Amazon has made it through various important achievements. Some of these achievements include early licensing receipts, signing the biggest launch contract in the history of the company, and the success of the prototype mission.
After going through many considerations, Amazon finally chose Leo's name. The meaning of this name is simple because it is taken from one of the satellite constellations, namely the Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This contest was chosen as the launch site for the previous Kuiper Project.
"Now, we are ready to share our permanent brand for this program: Amazon Leo, a simple tribute to the constellation of low Earth orbit satellites that drive our network," Amazon said, quoted from its official website on Friday, November 14.
Despite changing its name, Amazon's long-term mission has not changed. The company also said that its communication satellite program continues to run rapidly, even becoming a strong competitor to Starlink which now has more than 8,000 satellites.

Amazon has created a highly advanced customer terminal, including its first commercial gradual array antenna capable of supporting gigabit speeds. The achievement of this technology is critical to providing speed and reliability to end users.
Currently, Amazon already has more than 150 satellites operating in orbit. A number of leading customers and partners who use this service are JetBlue, L3Harris, DIRECTV Latin America, Sky Brasil, and NBN Co. in Australia.
"We continue to build on our early constellation of satellites quickly." Amazon said. "We will start rolling out the service once we add more range and capacity to the network to ensure the best experience for customers."
