JAKARTA Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert, Anima Anandkumar, emphasized the importance of building an independent AI ecosystem for Indonesia. This ecosystem must also follow local needs.
Delivered on the sidelines of the 2025 ADIPEC event in Abu Dhabi some time ago, Anima said that Indonesia must continue to invest in AI-based digital infrastructure and education. This is necessary so that Indonesia does not only become an AI technology market or importer.
"Every country must think about the AI ecosystem as a whole, starting from building data centers, strengthening them with GPUs, to training workers so that they are not only ready to use AI, but also native AI," said Anima, quoted on Wednesday, November 5.
The Professor of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) also explained the importance of the ability of experts and the younger generation to utilize AI tools with local data and needs. This ability is important to determine Indonesia's position in Southeast Asia.

Anima also emphasized that AI needs to be a revolution, not creating new digital inequality. Therefore, AI development should only be concentrated in big cities or dominated by foreign platforms.
According to him, Indonesia has a great opportunity because many of the best AI models in the world are being developed openly. This allows developing countries to actively participate in adapting these technologies.
"Indonesia has a great opportunity to build an inclusive AI ecosystem by utilizing data wealth, young talents, and the spirit of gotong royong which has become part of the nation's culture," said Anima.
